The Price Is Wrong For Palmer

The Raiders paid a hefty price for Carson Palmer.

Let me tell you bad of an idea it is that the Oakland Raiders gave up so much for Carson Palmer:

First of all look at Carson Palmer’s production last year. he threw for over 4000 yards again but most of it came in garbage time as the Cincinnati Bengals limped to a 4-12 record and a massive overhaul in the offseason. Palmer was deceptively horrible as he consistently overthrew receivers, threw horrible interceptions and killed more Bengals drives then I can remember. People want to blame Chad Ochocinco for all of the issues in Cinci last year but it’s not his fault that Palmer couldn’t hit him, Terrell Owens, Jermaine Gresham, Jordan Shipley or any of their 89 talented receivers at all.

Palmer should’ve taken most of the fall for that season because it was all on his shoulders. Ever since his knee injury in the playoffs against the Steelers years ago Palmer hasn’t been the same QB. Maybe he’s scared to get hit but the simple fact is that he wasn’t losing accuracy and arm strength and couldn’t get the ball up the field at all.

Speaking of blame here’s reason number two; Palmer’s attitude towards the Bengals was a joke. People kept making excuses for Palmer’s behavior saying that it was because Bengals ownership is extremely cheap (which is a fact) and that they didn’t want to build a winner. Reality is that the Bengals were building something and all of Palmer’s backers didn’t want to see it.

The team had just come off of a AFC North title and added players through the draft and gave Palmer more weapons than you could imagine. It was up to Palmer to make it work and he didn’t. instead of bearing down and going at it again he whined, complained moaned and wanted out of Cinci. He told ownership that he would rather retire than play another game in Cinci and bragged that he had $80 million in the bank to work with.

So Bengals Owner Mike Brown did what most GM’s should do in this situation, he told Palmer to stay home, drafted Andy Dalton and moved forward.

(side note: let’s give props to Mike Brown for not punking out to a player’s demands. Brown isn’t the most liked guy in Southern Ohio but he showed gumption in pressing ahead and not giving in to Palmer’s demands and did what was right for the team. what he got was a steal of a deal and more insurance for the Bengals future as the team looks like it’s getting better by the week.)

Andy Dalton is doing just fine in Palmer's place in Cinci.

That brings us to point three; do you see the Bengals without Palmer in the locker room? When the Colts lost Peyton Manning they fell flat on their face and haven’t gotten up since. The Bengals have thrived with Dalton who looks like the real deal and A.J. Green who is a beast of a wide receiver and will only get better. If Palmer is such an elite QB then why is a his now former team, who were supposed to be terrible, 4-2 and talking about the playoffs?

There have been whispers about how the locker room is much more peaceful and fun without Palmer (or Ochocinco) in it. is this really a guy you want to carry your team to the playoffs.

The final point is this; the Raiders gave the Bengals 2 possible first round picks in this year and next year’s draft to get Palmer. That’s insane.

No other team in their right mind would pay that much for a QB especially now that draft picks are much cheaper and when you look at the fact that scouts all say that Palmer isn’t the same QB as he was before 2005.

I don’t care how good of a relationship Palmer has with head coach Hue Jackson, or the fact that you needed a QB, the price was too high for a QB that is not elite, has arm and accuracy issues, and hasn’t played a game all year long.

Also think about his, you gave up a 3rd round pick in the supplemental draft to get Terrell Pryor and make him your QB of the future. That’s three picks you handed off for QB’s and one might never see the light of day in Oakland. if the Palmer deal doesn’t work then the Raiders just killed themselves for two years in the draft and could fall right back to the 5 or 4 win plateau in no time.

This experiment gets started this weekend as Palmer will get his first start of the season against the suddenly awoken Kansas City Chiefs. Palmer will have to get to know his receivers quickly and get the offense down just as quick.

If he does and the Raiders are successful then forget I ever wrote this blog…

But if he doesn’t then the Raiders will pay dearly, and Mike Brown will reap the rewards of it.

Random Thoughts Vol.2

Hit me... I dare you.

It’s been a month… time for more random thoughts.

I’m pretty sure that even if Dontrelle Willis’s improbable comeback as a pitcher fizzles out, he can be a DH or first baseman with that bat.

The Pirates are now dead… I knew it couldn’t last.

FC Barcelona losing to Chivas USA is the equivalent of Michigan losing to Appalachian State.

Justin Verlander might throw 6 more no hitters this year… I’m not joking about that either.

The U.S. Women didn’t choke.

(I mean did you watch the game? Japan never died. They kept fighting back and took advantage of the opportunities that were given to them. Sure the U.S. missed chances in penalty kicks where the Japan goaltender all of a sudden looked like Ken Dryden. However, you can’t say that they choked the game away when Japan played well in the face of adversity. Sometimes teams give games away but most times teams pull victory from the jaws of defeat. That’s what Japan did.)

Isn’t it funny that Ben Roethlisberger provided good off-season news for the Steelers as opposed to everyone else?

I’m surprised Steve Williams didn’t rip Tiger Woods even more than he did.

The Red Sox have not had a solid starting staff for the entire season with bullpen issues… yet have been in first place since June. And you think Adrian Gonzalez doesn’t deserve MVP?

Randy Moss aint done… seriously.

Are Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand the more extreme version of Mike Richards and Jeff Carter?

Seguin and Marchand are really enjoying winning the Stanley Cup.

I hate Merrill Hoge… but he was right about Tim Tebow…

And LeBron James would back him up wouldn’t he.

(My least favorite basketball player who shrinks in the moment defending the most overrated athlete not named Jimmer Fredette… god has a sense of humor.)

Kevin Durant dropped 66 at the Rucker… somewhere Russell Westbrook was seething.

Nice to see that Shea Weber got $7.5 million in arbitration… he’ll get that when he’s a Red Wing next year too.

The most aggravating rotation in baseball would consist of A.J. Burnett, John Lackey, Barry Zito, Edinson Volquez and Zach Greinke… with Burnett leading the league in headaches.

(I hate A.J. Burnett.)

The Eagles are the new Heat.

Osi Umenyiora can talk about a new deal all he wants. However, if he follows up another big sack season with a small sack season… kick rocks.

Ocho and Brady… Jesus.

What do you think Carson Palmer will do with all that money now that he’s retired?

Kyle Orton has lost his starting jobs to Jay Cutler, Rex Grossman and Tim Tebow…if he went on a 12 month bender I wouldn’t judge him.

Oklahoma is no.1 in the coaches’ poll. The last team to start the season no.1 and finish it as such… 2004 USC… good luck Boomer Sooner.

Strasburg is coming back… *giddy face*.

Shaq and Barkley on TNT… I need my cable back and fast.

The Red Sox traded for Erik Bedard to help their rotation… his ERA at Fenway is near 7 lifetime… I’m starting to feel ok that the Yankees didn’t get anything before the deadline.

Ryan Howard in his last 3 games has 3 home runs and 6 RBI, yep it must be August.

Michael Irvin on the cover of a gay magazine to promote equality of all people. Don’t know if I would’ve done it but very gutsy.

I win... again.

Duke being investigated for violations in recruiting… told you that no one is clean anymore.

When is Verlander’s next start again?

(We’re at a point with Verlander that he is must see TV. Verlander throws harder than anyone else in the league and his location has improved to the point where now he is close to pinpoint accurate. If you play the Tigers and Verlander is up on the mound then you might as well take it as a loss. He’s currently baseball’s best hurler and he hasn’t even hit his prime yet. Imagine this guy in 4 years… scary.)

Yani Tseng is the most dominant athlete in the world right now. And I am well aware that she is a 22 year-old female golfer and not many people watch women’s golf, but you should watch her.

Dan Uggla has a 25 game hitting streak… yet is batting .213… ummm?

NFL players like talking smack about how bad Roger Goodell is in the media, yet the signed this new CBA like everything is ok. Either take action or shut the hell up.

Is it wrong that I’m more excited for Syracuse football than Ohio State football? Keep in mind that I’m an OSU grad though I grew up with the ‘Cuse.

When A-rod retires there will be no specials on his greatness, no lauding over his accomplishments… hell there maybe a party thrown just for the fact that we never get to hear his name again.

(I haven’t been on A-Rod in a while but he’s like a bad ex-girlfriend he always finds a way to drive you crazy.

Really A-rod… illegal poker rings? And you still go after MLB and the Yankees tell you not to?

The Yankees are in a pennant race, one game back of Boston with the biggest part of the season approaching and you decide to blow a few thousand in front of low lifes, coke users and violent outcasts.

Eat your heart out Red Sox Nation.

I always say that I’m over A-rod but I really mean it this time. If this is true and A-rod did violate MLB policy then the Yankees should find a loophole in his deal, drop him like a bad habit and let Eduardo Nunez go through his growing pains at third.

I’m over the A-rod drama, I’m over the fact that there is always something with him and I’m ready to move on from him. Hopefully the Yankees brass feels the same.)

Kate Upton’s a Yankees fan, thank you God.

Had to end it off positively. Have you ever seen Kate Upton? That would make anyone feel good even when your third baseman is a perennial screw up.

Thank You Cincinnati… For Nothing

You got some 'splanin to do Marvin.

I would like to send a thank you note to the Cincinnati Bengals. Thank you for making me look like a complete idiot. Thanks for making me believe that you guys would actually contend for a Super Bowl and that you were the team to beat in the AFC. Thanks for once again giving me and your fans a false sense of hope after an active off-season which made your offense look like an all-star team waiting to explode even though you have a mediocre quarterback (note to the reader: I KNEW CARSON PALMER WAS OVERRATED AND EVEN SAID IT AND STILL PICKED THE BENGALS TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL!!! UUUUGGGHHH!!!)

Thanks for roping me in at the end of last year with that supposed great defense that was top 15 in the NFL and that was without Antwan Odom who got injured in the middle of the year while leading the league in sacks. If you saw Sunday’s game versus Atlanta then you would realized that even if they had Lamar Odom they still would be a horrible defense.

Save for a great play by Adam Jones (the artist formally known as Pac-man) the defense got gutted by a potent Falcons offense that rebounded after a tough road loss in Philadelphia. Roddy White shredded the Cincy secondary for 201 yards and Michael Turner ran all over the front 7 to the tune of 121 yards. The defense couldn’t stop the Falcons attack from the jump as Atlanta built a 24-3 lead at the half  then eventually withstood a roaring charge by the Bengals offense to win 39-32. In all honesty, Marvin Lewis’s defensive background has done him no justice in Cincinnati. The man that helmed the Baltimore Ravens dominating defense has not been able to replicate that success in Cincy.

The Bengals have never been ranked in the top ten in total defense during Lewis’s tenure even with high draft picks that they have used for seemingly talented players like Jonathan Joseph, Leon Hall and Ray Maleluga. They can’t get any pressure on the quarterback and have been shredded time and time again.

However, a special shout-out goes to the Cincinnati offense and the aforementioned Carson Palmer. Thanks for making believe that Terrell Owens was the missing piece to your offense (though he has been spectacular). It doesn’t hide the fact that your quarterback is terrible.

Forget the gaudy stats for a minute, Carson Palmer is not an elite quarterback, nor should he be the starter in Cincy after this year. His inconsistent play mixed in with horrible passes have killed the Bengals offensive production all year long. It’s forcing them to be a pass happy team when they really need to feed Cedric Benson like a rabid wolverine. At this point I’m actually waiting for T.O. and Ocho to raise hell and turn on Palmer in an instant.

Roddy White had a field day against the Cincinnati secondary.

If the Bengals have any shot of making a playoff run then it has to begin next week at home versus Miami. The Bengals have to get Benson 25 touches and limit Palmer’s throws. They have to stop the run game of Miami which seems like an impossible task with the number 22 ranked run defense in the league. They have to slow down Brandon Marshall who after a non effective day versus the Steelers yesterday is licking his chops to get at the same secondary that let White go off yesterday. They have to do something to resemble the Super Bowl contender that they were supposed to be, and they have to do it quick.

They trail Pittsburgh by 3 games and still have them twice in the next month, not to mention Baltimore again, New Orleans, Indianapolis and the Jets. That’s 6 potential in-season playoff games that may make or break them.

Matter of fact, I’m changing my mind they won’t turn it around, they’re done. The Bengals will finish 8-8 and begin to rebuild again, a sound far too familiar in the Queen City. The Bengals fooled all of us with their hopes and dreams hiding the inconsistencies and lack of production in areas that now hinder them. I knew this… yet I still picked them to win it all. I don’t know what’s worse the way their playing or me picking them to win it all. Never again.

Special shout-out also goes to these teams for making me look bad:

-San Francisco 1-6. I picked them to win the NFC West, they lost to the worst team in the league after leading by ten. I love Mike Singletary but he may be shown the door at season’s end.

-New Orleans 4-3. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Madden Curse has found Drew Brees. Four picks against the Browns?… THE BROWNS?!

-Minnesota 2-4. Favre should’ve never left his tractor and he knows it. If you saw him after the game on Sunday night then you saw a beaten man who didn’t want to take anymore. He’s a walking Roberto Duran. Unfortunately for him there is still 10 weeks to go.
