What in the hell are the Giants front office doing this year?
As of right now the Giants have no pass catching Tight End, questions at running back, two dependable receivers, questions at linebacker, 3 healthy cornerbacks and no answer on the offensive line…
And Jerry Reese is just sitting there twiddling his thumbs.
What is he doing? Why is he not making any moves? He knows that the Giants need help in the middle of their defense and doesn’t go after any linebackers with Nick Barnett and Channing Crowder on the table. He knows that the run game was suspect at the end of last year so he waits to offer Ahmad Bradshaw a deal and let’s Cedric Benson and Ronnie Brown sign in other places. He let Steve Smith, the teams number one pass catcher in the last two years mind you, just sit around and wait for a deal and eventually Smith signed today with the Philadelphia Eagles (but at this point who hasn’t).
Is Reese floating in the Hudson and we don’t know it yet?
Right now the Giants are peddling so far backwards that we might as well call Eli Manning Archie. The team has no identity, no direction and as of right now no hope in making the playoffs. After last year’s nose dive in the final three games of the season the Giants are still plummeting and have no signs of stopping until they hit the ground and turn into a bloody pulp.
I couldn’t tell you who the Giants will throw the ball to besides Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks, I couldn’t tell you who will protect Eli or who will stop the pass in the secondary.
And we have no answers. No explanations. Nothing. The New York Giants are staring 3-13 in the face with no signs of help and their fans can’t do anything about it because Reese and the front office are sitting on their hands and hoping for some sort of miracle to occur.
Do they think that Bear Pascoe or Duke Calhoun are the second coming of Mark Bavarro or Amani Toomer?
For Giants fans it has to be frustrating to see the Eagles add another player in what has been an offseason of epic proportions. The Eagles have revamped their D-line, secondary and added depth everywhere on offense. Sure it stinks that Smith signed with an archrival, but they offered him a deal, the Giants didn’t. What would you do when you’re faced with unemployment; wait for your old team to offer you a deal like you were, or take what you could at the moment? Exactly.
Reese could’ve given Smith a deal last year after being a league leader in receptions in 2009, but didn’t. He could’ve given him one at anytime this year after free agency begun but he didn’t.
This is and all of the Giants other shortcomings in free agency are Reese’s fault to the utmost degree. He can’t fix anything at this rate because the free agency crop is all eaten up and camp is in full swing. The Giants have to essentially make do with what they have and it’s not much.
This isn’t good news for Coach Tom Coughlin who needs a good year to stop rumors of him being on the outs especially after last year’s meltdown. How can he make a playoff run when he doesn’t know what he has at any position other than QB or defensive line?
What also doesn’t help is the continuous saga featuring Osi Umenyiora. If Reese packaged him to San Diego for Vincent Jackson tomorrow I don’t think anyone would complain at this point. However, that would require Reese to actually do something, which he doesn’t seem interested in doing right now.
Fact of the matter is that the Giants are in serious trouble. With the regular season lurking and no real depth on the team the Giants aren’t looking like a playoff team.
The NFC East is out of the question and the Wildcard is too with the Cowboys, Buccaneers, Saints, Falcons, Bears and Lions all looking like contenders.
If they fall flat on their faces don’t blame Coughlin, Manning or anyone but Jerry Reese. His inability to improve the Giants at any position except punter has doomed them until 2012. It may cost Coughlin his job, put more pressure on Eli and stress out Giants fans every Sunday.
Thanks a lot Jerry. Now I kind of wish the lockout was still going on.
